International Students Can Benefit From CLEP, Both in the US and Abroad
International students hoping to get a degree in the US have certain challenges, but one thing that can make the college experience easier for them is the CLEP program.
CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams allow students to demonstrate college level knowledge in various general education subjects. Successful CLEP takers can earn between 3-12 college credits from each CLEP exam, accepted at most colleges and universities in the US. CLEP is definitely a predominately US program, and most students who take CLEPs are US students, however, there are growing options for international students. US students normally take CLEP exams to save money, save time, skip class, or graduate on time.
International students can take CLEPs for any of these same reasons, however there are some specific advantages that international students can receive.
For many international students, they might learn general education subjects in a high school or college setting, but upon entering a US university, that knowledge or credit might not be recognized. CLEP is a great way for international students to prove and validate their learning.
Another option for some international students would be for them to actually take some CLEP test before applying at a US university. CLEP testing centers have a limited presence abroad, with stronger concentrations being in Europe and the Middle East. Students in those areas can take CLEPs locally before trying to get into a US college.
CLEP is a program that offers many benefits to all students, but extra benefits to international students. International students should consider using CLEP to help further their education in the US.
