THE AGE OF RENAISSANCE AND THE RISE OF MODERN HUMANISTIC EDUCATION

Introduction

The prevalent modern notion that a “renaissance period” followed Western Europe’s medieval age was first expressed by numerous Italian writers who lived between 1350c and 1550c.

Renaissance should be reserved to describe certain exciting trends in the thought, literature, and the arts that emerged in Italy from roughly 1350 to 1550 and then spread to northern Europe during the first half of the 16th century. This paper will limit itself to the understanding of a renaissance period to mean an epoch in intellectual and cultural history.

The word renaissance literally means rebirth, it is sometimes thought that after about 1350, certain Italians who were newly cognizant of Greek and roman cultural accomplishments initiated a classical cultural rebirth after a long period of death.

CONCEPT OF RENAISANCE IN THE REALM OF CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL HISTORY

In the realms of thought, literature, and the arts important distinguishing traits may certainly be found that make the concept of a renaissance meaningful for intellectual and cultural history:

1. The continuity rediscovery and the spread of classical learning

Medieval scholars knew many roman authors such as Virgil, Ovid, and Cicero but in the renaissance, the works of others such as Livy, Tacitus and Lucretius were rediscovered and made familiar. More importantly was the renaissance discovery of the literature of classical Greece.

In the 12th and 13th century, Greek scientific and philosophical treatises were made available to westerners in Latin translations, but none of the great Greek literary masterpieces and practically none of the major works of Plato were yet known. Only a handful of medieval westerners read the Greek language.

In the renaissance, large numbers of western scholars learned Greek and mastered almost the entire Greek literary heritage that is known today.

2. New uses for classical learning

Renaissance thinkers not only knew many more classical texts than their medieval counterparts, but they used them in new ways.

Medieval writers tended to employ their ancient sources for the purposes of complementing and confirming their own preconceived Christian assumptions but renaissance writers customarily drew on the classics to reconsider their preconceived notions and alter their modes of expression.

There was firm determination to learn from classical antiquity, more pronounced in the realms of architecture and art.

3. A secular renaissance culture

Although renaissance culture was by no means pagan, it certainly was more secular in its orientation than culture of the middle ages. During this period, the Italian city- states focused on the attainment of success in the urban political arena and the living well in this world. Such secular ideals helped create a culture that was increasingly non- ecclesiastical.

Humanism and education

This word has two different meanings, one technical and one general but both apply to the cultural goals and ideals of a large number of renaissance thinkers.

In its technical sense, humanism was a program of studies that aimed to replace the medieval scholastic emphasis of logic and metaphysics with the study of language, literature, history and ethics. Ancient literature was always preferred: the study of Latin classics was at the core of curriculum and whenever possible, the student was expected to advance to Greek.

Humanistic teachers argued that scholastic logic was too arid and irrelevant to practical concerns of life. They preferred humanities which were meant to make their students virtuous and prepare them for contributing best to the public functions of the state. Women were ignored but aristocratic women were sometimes given humanist training in order to make them appear more polished.

Humanism stressed the dignity of man as the most excellent of all Gods creature below the angels. Some renaissance thinkers argued that man was excellent because he alone of the earthly creatures could obtain knowledge of god.

The first humanist : Francis Petrarch (1304-1374).

Among the greatest accomplishment of Italian renaissance scholars and writers, the work of Francis Petrarch was the earliest of the humanists in the technical sense of the term.

Petrarch was a committed Christian who believed that scholasticism was entirely misguided because it concentrated on abstract speculation rather than teaching peoples how to behave properly and attain salvation.

He dedicated himself to searching for undiscovered ancient Latin texts and writing his own moral treatises in which he initiated classical style and quoted classical phrases.

Civic humanism (1400-1450)

It was developed by Italian thinkers and scholars located mainly in Florence. Civic humanists like Florentines Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444) centuries and Leon Battista Albert (1404-1472) centuries agreed with Petrarch on the need of eloquence and study of classical literature. But they taught that mans nature equipped him for action, for usefulness to his family and society and for serving the state.

The most vivid of the civic humanists writing is Alberti’s on the family (1443), in which he argued that the nuclear family was instituted by nature for the well being of humanity.

Alberti believed that man is by nature more energetic and industrious and that woman was created to increase and continue generations and to nourish and preserve those already born.

The civic humanists are noted for their success in opening up the field of classical Greek studies. They recognized the glories of ancient Greek literature. Some of Italian scholars traveled to Constantinople and eastern cities in search of forgotten masterpieces.

In 1423 one Italian, Giovanni aurispa, alone brought back 238 manuscript books, including works of Sophocles, Euripides and Thucydides. They were also involved in the work of translation into Latin. In this way, most of the Greek classics, particularly the writings of Plato, the dramatists and the historians were first made available to Western Europe.

The evolution of music as an independent art

Music in Western Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries reached such a high point of development that it constitutes, together with painting and sculpture, one of the most brilliant aspects of renaissance endeavor.

The development of music followed an independent path that had been in progress in medieval Christ Dom. Leadership came from those trained in the service of the church, but secular music was valued as well and its principles combined those of sacred music to bring a decided gain in color and emotional appeal. The distinction between sacred and profane became less sharp; and most composers did not restrict their activities to either side. Music was no longer regarded merely as a diversion or an adjunct to worship but came into its own serious independent art.

Contributions of the renaissance period to education

1. Philosophies of the period like Neo-Platonism helped scientific thinkers to reconsider older notions that had impeded the progress of medieval sciences.

2. A mechanistic view of the universe advanced by the great Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes played an enormous role in the development of modern science because it insisted upon finding observable and measurable caused and effects in the world of nature. Archimedes taught that the universe operates on the basis of mechanical forces like a great machine.

3. One of the other renaissance developments that contributed to the rise of modern science was the breakdown of the medieval separation between the realms of theory and practice. This period shows advancement in mathematics, science e.g. human anatomy and architecture. In general, they helped make science more empirical and practically oriented than it had been earlier.

4. The achievement per excellence in astronomy –the formulation and proof of the heliocentric theory that the earth revolves around the sun (Copernicus 1530).

5. Among the physicist of renaissance were Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo. Leonardo da Vinci worked out the principles of an astonishing variety of inventions including a diving board, a steam engine, an armored tank, and a helicopter. Galileo developed the law that guide the gravitational fall which was later improved on by Newton some fifty years later.

6. Paracelsus (1493-1541) insisted on the close relationship of chemistry and medicine foreshadowed and directly influenced important modern achievements in pharmacology and healing.

7. Michael Servetus (1511-1553) discovered the pulmonary circulation of the blood. He described how the blood leaves the right chambers of the heart, is carried to the lungs to be purified then returns to the heart.

When pursuing an online degree, you likely want to complete it as quickly as possible, being that you have other demands and responsibilities in your life, including providing an income for yourself at least, if not also for your family.
One way to speed up the process of earning your online degree is by taking equivalency tests. These tests allow you to complete your online degree efficiently and affordably. They will require some studying, but many colleges will grant credit and/or advanced standing for successful completion of equivalency exams.
The three most common equivalency tests are the following tests:
1. The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) – This test provides students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses.
You can gain college credit for what you already know via independent study, noncredit adult courses, and/or professional development.
You can save considerable money as the CLEP costs just $60, much less than hundreds or thousands for an online course.
If you’re just a few credits short of earning that degree, CLEPs could make all the difference in obtaining that degree.
CLEPs are available in 34 college-level introductory subjects.
Over 2,900 colleges grant undergraduate credit for CLEP, between 3-12 college credits for each CLEP exam taken.
Over 1,300 colleges administer the exam.
The test is administered on computer and is available all year-long. They are timed and 90 minutes long. With the exception of the English Composition with Essay section, all the rest of the exam is composed of multiple-choice questions, though the mathematics section can also have some fill-in-the-blank type questions.
All CLEP exams are scored on a scale of 20 to 80; you need to score 50+ (equivalent to a C grade) in order to earn the credit.
2. The DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) – These tests enable people to use their knowledge acquired outside the classroom to accomplish their educational and professional goals.
The current cost of these tests is $70 each and subject tests include such diverse subjects from business and math to health and social sciences to the humanities.
These tests are currently accepted or administered at over 1,900 colleges and universities nationwide and are approved by the American Council on Education (ACE.)
3. Excelsior College Examinations – These exams allow you to complete your degree efficiently and affordably, earn the credit you need for promotion or certification, and demonstrate what you know for college admission or placement. They are accepted by Excelsior College and other universities around the nation.
Subject Tests include subjects in the arts and sciences, business, education, and nursing. Overall, there are 40 different subject tests to choose from. Many of these tests offer upper-level credit to those who score well enough on them. To take these tests, you need to go to your nearby Pearson Professional Centers, which are open up to six days a week. The tests are multiple-choice.
Some universities will also have their own type of equivalent tests, specifically for those students who have been out of school for a while, to better determine what level a person is at in regards to placement in college courses.
Occasionally, some universities will require you to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) if you never have before. This test consists of a Reasoning Test that has three main components: a Critical Reading section, a Mathematics section, and a Writing section.
There are also SAT Subject Tests, which fall into five general subject categories: English, History & Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Foreign Languages. These are not always required by colleges, but can give them a better idea of how advanced you are in your education and where you should be placed in regards to your courses.
For those applying to graduate school, the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are usually prerequisites as the university will use these in part to help determine your qualifications for graduate study.
There are two types of GRE: A general reasoning test and subject tests.
The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. This test is being administered on computers in most areas of the world, whereas a few places still use a paper-based version of the test. It is administered year-round.
The GRE Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in these eight disciplines:
Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology Chemistry Computer Science Literature in English Mathematics Physics Psychology
These are intended for students who have majored in or have extensive background in that specific area. They are administered in November, December, and April at paper-based test centres worldwide.
Knowing what tests you either need to take or should take should help you enter the online degree program you want and even reduce the amount of time it takes for you to earn that degree.

Breaking the Technology Barrier: Using Technology in Education

Patrick Wellert

ETC 558

Northern Arizona University

Abstract

It has long been difficult for teachers to effectively communicate the objectives and goals in a fun and exciting way that reaches the students. In the changing times teachers need to find ways to include students into the lesson using the technology made available to them. It has long been believed that teachers need to get over their fear and use technology openly with students in order to meet their educational needs. By including students into the lessons teachers will experience a more positive classroom experience.

Breaking the Technology Barrier: Using Technology in Education

Technology and education have always seemed to go together. In order to prepare students for the workplace or college they need to be able to be exposed to it. Teachers in the classroom use technology believing that the students are gaining valuable information and retaining the concepts taught but in reality the students need to be involved in the lesson and actively participating in activities that include technology. Student engagement is critical to student motivation during the learning process. The more students are motivated to learn, the more likely it is that they will be successful in their efforts. (Beeland, 2002).

Uses of Technology

There are numerous uses of technologies that are available to teachers to include students into the classroom’s lesson. These include Interactive Whiteboards, Proximas, PowerPoint games, interactive DVDs, Ventrilo chat software, Myspace, Blackboard, and scavenger hunts. To put the uses of technology into an effective practice, teachers need to help students set achievable goals; encourage students to assess themselves and their peers; help them to work co-operatively in groups and ensure that they know how to exploit all the available resources for learning (Hall, 2006). The following are how some technology is used to help students learn.

Interactive Whiteboards

There are two different types of whiteboards. The first is a virtual version of a dry erase board. It allows students to see what the instructor or other students write or draw using a special pen. The second functions similar to a normal whiteboard but also contains a projector screen, an electronic copy board or as a computer projector screen on which the computer image can be controlled by touching or writing on the surface of the panel instead of using a mouse or keyboard. They function by connecting a projector to the whiteboard panel with the use of a computer and software. It is important to know the different functions in order to determine which whiteboard is right for the educator. By knowing the difference you can also learn the terminology and understand the basic functions of each.

Proximas and PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a software program that is being used in the classroom as a tool to incorporate learning activities into the curriculum. PowerPoint enables teachers and students to actively create presentations with graphics, charts, diagrams, and pictures in their slideshows to help make often complicated ideas and lessons more manageable and understandable. It is a way for students to engage in research, and present information to their peers. When students are actively learning, taking an active role in the learning process, they seem to understand the information better, and enjoy the lesson. The use of a game also allowed Jones and Mungai to directly address the learning style needs of the visual (58%) and tactile learner (22%), which represents eighty-percent of those involved in the content related courses. When constructed with different learning styles in mind, games can often accelerate the learning process (Jones & Mungai, 2003). By itself PowerPoint is not a cure-all remedy, but rather a tool that needs to be understood and used properly for it to be effective as an active learning tool. It also has shown that students that did use PowerPoint as a learning tool were more engaged in the discussions (Rowcliffe, 2003). This will encourage teachers to use PowerPoint as a way to involve students into a lesson by stimulating discussion. For PowerPoint to take place in a classroom an Interactive Whiteboard or a Proxima is needed. A Proxima displays a computer screen onto a screen much like a projector at a movie theater. The user is able to display items such as websites, PowerPoint, and interactive games. A way for students to interact using this technology is through games created by teachers and used in the PowerPoint lesson. Games such as Hollywood Squares, Jeopardy, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire are created using slides and links to answer the questions. Teachers may use a blank template and fill them with different answers for the students to use as a review. Teachers may even let the students create their own review using the blank templates. This activity can also be used in a small group or team setting.

Advantages to the Students

Learning sciences research tells us that students learn much better “by doing” rather than “by listening.” This means that passive learning – the traditional lecture – is being replaced in our classrooms by more active learning activities that emphasize student problem solving, discussion, presentation and other “authentic” learning-by-doing-activities. (Day, 2004). By including students into the lesson it opens up a realm of possibilities because students can retain roughly only 10% of what they write down.

Teacher Apprehension

So why are teachers not using technology that engages and interacts more frequently with students? There are many reasons why teachers feel apprehensive or uncomfortable using an interactive whiteboard, proxima and PowerPoint. The first of which could be the length of time from their college prep program until now. Teachers often get exposed to and learn new technologies in their teacher prep courses. Some might not have been prepared enough upon entering the workforce. Although the availability of technology in American schools has increased (US Department of Education, 2000), information released by The National Education Association (2004) indicates that less than 35% of public school teachers feel they are “well prepared” or “very well prepared” to use this technology effectively.

The second reason is blockage from the school’s control or security system. Teachers claim that the firewalls and filtering systems create blockage in their attempts to educate and communicate with others with technology (Murray, 2004). The teachers and other users can become frustrated when they do not understand why a certain item like a website used for a scavenger hunt or a hyperlink in a PowerPoint are not available.

The inconsistency from school to school is another reason. At one site there may be access to all different types of technology while at another the absence is very evident. The general public perception is that our schools are using technology and managing our resources in that area well. In several surveys done some schools do show nearly 100 percent use of technology while in others the use of technology is nonexistent (Starr, 2003).

Summary

The research has shown that there are proven benefits to using technology in the classroom. The ability to integrate technology into the classroom can add valuable information and ideas to our students.

By facilitating Proximas, PowerPoint, and interactive whiteboards our teachers will be able to reach a broader audience of learners.

Finding good answers to the challenging questions of today will require that we have the best young minds working on those answers. They need to have the best science education possible.

Good science education is very important for our country’s future, including our national security. If our enemies were the first ones to develop new weapons, and we couldn’t defend them we’d be in big trouble.

What is the best way to learn science? Maybe there’s not just one “best way.” Science projects and science experiments give crucial interactive experiences that help many children learn better.

A major university did a study about science courses and science majors a year ago. They found that 90 percent of college students abandon science as a major because of perceived poor teaching; and, of those who continue to study science, 74 percent of them think their science teaching is of bad quality.

This is not good news for science teachers. They are perceived as not doing a good job engaging the students and getting them involved. Not that it is easy to do so. Students need interactive learning to get the most out of science classes.

In today’s world young people live with technology that has transformed their day to day lives. Watching videos on their cell phones, sending photographs and text messages through thin air — teachers need to get to these students involved in different ways than before. Ironically the best way to engage science students is to use one of the oldest and most traditional ways of teaching science.

Science projects and science experiments need to become a part of everyday science curricula. Not just for students who participate in science fair projects which often are seen as extra-curricular. They require involvement of parents who often aren’t available to help all the time. Projects need to be done in school, not at home.

That’s why internet resources like the Science Projects Store are so valuable. This new website has a searchable database of 4,137 science project kits and over 5,000 science project books. This is a great science project resource that parents, students and teachers need to know about. (Please pass this article on to those who might be interested.)

On the Science Projects Store site you can search for any type of science project or experiment that exists. It has kits, books toys, games and accessories concerning:

1. Elementary school science projects 2. Math science projects 3. Winning science fair projects, 4. Fun experiments with science for children 5. Solar energy science projects 6. “Green” earth science projects 7. Energy science projects, 8. Science projects in chemistry 9. Scientific method projects 10. Science project with a volcano 11. Science projects with plants 12. Music science projects 13. Middle school science experiment 14. Water science projects 15. High School science projects

This website a great resource for science educators and parents, and it also answers the question: “What do I buy my children for the holidays?” The gifts available from the Science Projects Store will entertain while they educate, and stimulate children’s brains, possibly raising their IQ.

Who knows, this website may help students enjoy science education more than ever before, and inspire them to solve the major problems faced by the world today!

Today, one can earn an online degree or certification in diverse fields of education and employment industries through online courses that are readily accessible twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. As an off-campus student, individuals gain access to fully-accredited online coursework and degree programs without ever having to leave the comforts of their own homes or personal offices; thus creating a more relaxed learning atmosphere.
Online courses range from arts and humanities, health and medicine, business, science and technology, computers, social sciences, education and teaching, trades and careers, and many more.
If you pursue an education online, you will be able to get either a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree in one of the many courses that are offered. Along with many choices of courses, there are also a wide variety of online schools available.
Overall, online education is much less expensive than going to a traditional school because you save on travel, time, and the courses themselves cost less. Much of the time you are able to get your degree much quicker and with much more ease in an online program than at a traditional college.
You’re thinking about furthering your career or finally getting your college degree. But with so many educational choices online, how do you know whether it’s right for you? Here are some pointers you should consider, before making your decision. There are many factors motivating adult learners to continue their education, particularly with the ease of online institutions.
These can range from:

advancing your career,

seeking a raise, or

simply an eagerness to learn new skills or new knowledge.
This motivation is important, because you won’t have anyone else standing over you forcing you to attend class or turning in your assignments. Therefore you should carefully consider if you’re a self-motivating adult learner who can thrive in the online environment before enrolling.
Currently, there are virtually hundreds of online schools, universities and colleges that cater to the needs of working persons and/or homebound individuals.
Aside from online certification and continuing education courses, ambitious students can conveniently earn not only an Associate’s Degree in respective fields of education, but can also earn up to a Doctorate’s as well.
Whether aspiring students wish to attain online continuing education units, or simply want to fulfill their career goals by earning an online degree in which particular field interests them, an online education meets and often exceeds the expectations of enrolled candidates.
There are several advantages to pursuing a degree or training online. You can do it at your own speed in your own time. While a degree at a traditional university or college may take 2 to 4 years, you can cut that time short or stretch it out as needed. You can get loans, financial aid and flexible financing just as you would at any other school. Just be sure that the online university is accredited and that your online credits will be recognized in your chosen industry or career field. Get online and get ahead!

In an effort to strengthen science education in the country, an inter-institutional collaborative project, â??Enrichment of Resource Material for Science Education,â?? was recently launched in the Capital. The project attempts to reconceptualise science resource material and focus on the potential and scope of â??science kitsâ?? to popularize the subject. These low cost portable science kits vary depending on level, theme or even needs.

The project has been jointly undertaken by the National Council of Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Ministry of Science and Technology; Unesco, Central Institute of Education (CIE), Delhi University; and Society for Education and Social Development (SESD). The project also has an active involvement of experts from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) Mumbai, Delhi University Centre for Science Education and Communication, Institute for Life Long Learning (ILLL) Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia University, colleges of Delhi University, IP University, Ignou, DIETS, schools of Delhi, among others.

While announcing the launch of the project, Warren Mellor, director, Unesco, said that the outcomes of the project would have an impact not only at a national level but in other countries as well. On teacher education, Mohd Akhtar Siddiqui, chairperson, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), emphasized that itâ??s the teachers who make all the difference in making a subject interesting and not textbooks or curriculum, hence, they need to be empowered. â??This project would validate the science resources and also popularize them across the country,â? he added.

The focus of the project would be to pedagogically evaluate the sampled science kits from sources like department of science and technology (DST), HBCSE, NCERT and to enrich them further. The kits would be accompanied by manuals/handbooks and ICT backup so that it can be further disseminated. These packages would be tried out with teacher educators, teachers and students in schools of Delhi, to begin with, and also with community based organizations.

Elaborating further, US Sharma, general secretary, Society for Education and Social Development, said: â??The project will be completed in two phases and we also plan to take it to an international level.â?
